True Life Tells the Truth about Plastic Surgery
While talking about plastic surgery shows such as 'Extreme Makeover" in class, it has become apparent that these shows have become a phenonmenon. But why? I don't see the appeal to these shows.
These shows make viewers make them feel like it's okay and acceptable.
In shows such as "Extreme Makeover", the idea of plastic surgery is glamorized so that the everyday housewife can look it that and say, "Maybe a nose job is necessary."
While reality shows that corrupt our thinking are on the market, there are other shows that show the consequences of taking plastic surgery so lightly.
I am a frequent viewer of MTV's true life, and when talking about plastic surgery in this unit, one episode stood out to me. This episode was called "I hate my plastic surgery'. This episode is about two girls who had plastic surgery done but do not like the results. One woman, Nikki, had a nose job. After the procedure she realizes that she does not like how it is done and wants to get it fixed by going through another procedure. She is basing her decision on the fact that she is an aspiring model. Her reasons seem purely superficial.
As opposed to Nikki, the other woman on the show had other problems that were not superficial. Amanda had a breast implant and it quite literally was killing her. Her body had a deadly reaction to the silicon. She got severely sick from the procedure and was not able to perform basic functions anymore. She wanted to get them taken out .She decided to go through another procedure to get them taken out in hopes that she will be able to go back to her normal life.
Reality shows such as these, actually show reality. As opposed to "Extreme Makeover", this show shows consequences to these decisions, not just benefits. It shows that making the decision to get an unecessary procedure done, may change your life.
Having television shows such as these on the air is important to viewers. It shows them what could really happen. It shows them that plastic surgery does not only result in beauty, it can also be life threatening.

I agree, True Life does a better job of showing what plastic surgery is like. I used to watch extreme makeover with my mom and sister and what I find strange about the show is that most of the people on it are already married. This goes to show that most of the people who get plastic surgery are doing it for themselves and not for others. After all, if your married why are you so worried about the way you look? This is more prevelant with women, who's husbands may think they look fine, but after having children, they are not happy with the way they look. But they skip past the actual pain of surgery. I had one surgery on my knee and it wasn't all that major. I don't know why anyone would voluntarily go through that. MTV, strangely enough does a better job of showing the realities of surgery by showing post-op patients in pain and basically miserable.
ReplyDeleteI agree that TV portrays plastic surgery as too normal. Women watch these shows like Bridal Plasty and want to change themselves with surgery...it's ridiculus. There is an episode of Taboo that shows what can really happen when plastic surgery goes wrong much like True Life. In the episode I saw there was a woman who thought her breasts were not big enough. When American doctors refused to ake them bigger the woman went to Brazil to get them done. Her surgery caused her extreme back pain and her breast implants became infected. When she finally went to the doctor he told her he would have to permanently remove her implants. She has such an extreme infection that when he cut a slit in her breast to drain the fluid her skin tore to the point where the doctor could just reach his hand in and grab the implants to pull them out. I think anyone ever thinking about plastic surgery should watch that woman's story. It's ridiculus how easily women fall for something so unnatural.
ReplyDeleteTrue life is a great show for people to watch and really see how people that get surgery go through negative reactions to what they had done. People need to see that it may seem cool to get a nose job, but afterwards you may not be happy with it. You might have been expecting something else then what was really done. Another thing is, people see only the positive side of surgery. True life shows them what kind of bad things could happen from surgery. Just like the girl who was deathly allergic to the silicone, I'm sure there are many people that may have passed away because of an allergic reaction, but you never hear about the bad side of surgery. I think more people should watch true life and get a better understanding about what could happen to them.
ReplyDeleteIts good that true life had thaty episode showing the consequences of plastic surgery because now its not just Tv showing the positive aspects and saying that everything will be fine when maybe it wont be.
ReplyDeleteI love this. I didn't actually know that this show existed. I am glad to know that there is something out there to contradict the growing trend of plastic surgery. I just hope that this is given in the same light. It is dangerous to undergo as many surgeries as people do. Prime example, as I have said before, is Michael Jackson. Media puts such stigma on being perfect and this is the result they get for doing so. It is horrible to think that so many people feel this badly about themselves just because the media and the medical industry have merged together to make more money.
